    Lesser Grain Borer

    Description:
The adults have a downward facing head which is not visible from the top. The body is a shiny red-brownish, 1/10 inch long and cylindrical. The wing covers are covered with small pits. It is a strong flier.

    Damage:
The eggs are deposited on the outside of the kernel. After hatching, the larvae bore into a kernel and complete their development inside it. Large, irregularly shaped holes in the grain are characteristic feeding damage. Infested grain sometimes has a sweetish-musty odor. Grain dust from the feeding can cause problems with fumigation. This is one of the most common and serious pests.
